Cognitive Restructuring in CBT with Youth

CE Hours 1

About this course

This workshop provides clinicians with a comprehensive foundation in cognitive restructuring (CR) as a core intervention within Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) for children and adolescents presenting with internalizing disorders such as anxiety and depression. Participants will explore the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive distortions and irrational beliefs, and learn how to identify, challenge, and modify maladaptive thinking patterns using evidence-based verbal techniques including Socratic questioning, empirical and logical disputation, consequential analysis, and evidence-gathering. Special attention will be given to the critical role of the therapeutic relationship, empathy, and validation in the CR process, as well as developmental and cultural considerations that shape how these techniques are adapted for diverse youth populations. Through case vignettes, role-play exercises, and creative clinical strategies, participants will leave with practical, immediately applicable skills to implement cognitive restructuring effectively and ethically in their work with young clients.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common cognitive distortions within the CBT framework and irrational beliefs within the REBT framework as they present in youth with internalizing disorders.
  • Describe and apply a minimum of four cognitive restructuring techniques including evidence-gathering, logical disputation, consequential analysis, and functional disputation using developmentally appropriate language and clinical strategies tailored to children and adolescents.
  • Adapt cognitive restructuring interventions to account for developmental stage differences between middle childhood (ages 7–11) and adolescence (ages 12–18), including appropriate modifications to abstraction level, language, and the integration of behavioral techniques.
  • Identify culturally responsive adaptations including surface-level and deep-structure modifications necessary for ethical and effective CR practice with youth from diverse backgrounds.
